How a bottle earns Platinum.

At the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, a Double Gold means every judge on the panel scored the bottle Gold. Win Double Gold three years in a row and the competition names it Platinum. This bottle has now done that twice.

Different judges every year, tasting blind, reaching the same verdict four years straight. That's the part that's hard to fake.

Why "extra oak" usually means "hope you don't notice."

Ten years ago, you could read an age statement on plenty of bourbons under $100 and know roughly what was in the bottle. That was normal.

Then demand outpaced barrels. Distilleries had young whiskey to move and a business to keep running. Age statements came off quietly. Very Old Barton lost its around 2013. Elijah Craig followed in 2015 and 2016. Knob Creek did too.

Extra oak has its own version of that trick. A second barrel is an easy way to cover up spirit that isn't mature enough to stand on its own, more char and vanilla papering over something thin underneath.

Our base is already 8 to 15 years old before it ever sees a second barrel. The judges who gave it Double Gold four years running were tasting a finish on top of a base that didn't need to hide.

Fox & Oden Double Oaked Straight Bourbon

Why we can afford to wait for the second barrel.

Finishing in a second charred barrel means holding the bourbon even longer. Most distilleries can't afford that wait. We can. We don't own a still or a rickhouse.

NO STILL TO FEED

A distillery has costs running every day and has to sell what's aging now. We're not on that clock. The second barrel isn't a cost we're racing to recover.

NO RICKHOUSE RENT

Extra time in oak means extra time paying for space, insurance, and evaporation. We don't carry that overhead, so a second finish doesn't threaten our margin.

THEN, A SECOND BARREL

We start with barrels already 8 to 15 years old, then finish them in a second new charred oak barrel. Aging comes first. The finish is added on top, not instead of it.

8 to 15 years is a range across components, not one barrel. The youngest barrel in the blend is 8 years old, so the floor is real, not rounded up.

What four years of judges already told you.

From Forbes, Drinkhacker, The Daily Pour, and r/bourbon. Every line as published.

“Aromas of vanilla and seasoned oak that are followed by a candied sweetness with a long, sweet and spicy finish.”

Forbes · Father's Day Gift Guide 2025

“Old mgp funk with extra barrel char going on. Love it.”

r/bourbon, 2022

“Pretty viscous on the palate with some heat and loads of oak, tannin and char.”

The Daily Pour
85/100

“A light entry on the palate that teases you with a feather touch, but quickly transforms into a powerhouse of intense oakiness.”

Good Spirits News, 2023
B+

“The extra oak aging seems remarkably restrained until the finish, where burly tannins interrupt the sweetness along with notes of black pepper, cinnamon stick, and subtle smoke.”

Buying for someone who already owns a "finished" bourbon?

Forbes put this bottle on its Father's Day Gift Guide in 2025. That's not us saying it. That's a magazine that doesn't need to.

If the person you're shopping for already owns three bourbons with "finished" or "double oaked" on the label, this one has a streak behind it: Double Gold, four years running.

You don't need to know what any of that means at the register. You just need to know it's real.

Questions, answered

What does "double oaked" actually mean?
The base bourbon ages 8 to 15 years, same as our Straight Bourbon. Then it goes into a second new charred oak barrel for an added finish.
Is Platinum a higher score than Double Gold?
No. Platinum means Double Gold three years in a row at SFWSC. It's the same result, repeated, not a bigger trophy.
Extra oak sounds like it could just mean bitter and harsh. How do you know it isn't?
We don't just say it isn't. Judges at SFWSC gave it Double Gold four years running, 2023 through 2026. That's an independent check on exactly this question.
Is the 8 to 15 year claim real?
Yes. The components run 8 to 15 years, and the youngest barrel in the blend sets the bottom of that range. The age isn't printed on the label, but we publish it everywhere this bottle is sold.
Will every batch taste the same?
No. The second barrel adds variation on top of the base bourbon's own variation. We print the batch number so you can track it.
Who actually distilled it?
MGP in Indiana. We select the barrels, finish them in a second barrel, and bottle in Holland, Michigan.
Is this a good bottle to gift?
Forbes picked it for their 2025 Father's Day Gift Guide, and each bottle carries the batch number on the label.
When will it arrive?
These bottles are on pre-order and start shipping August 24. Order now and yours goes out with the first run.
Can it ship to my state?
We ship to 44 states. The ones we can't reach right now are Alaska, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Michigan, Oregon, South Dakota and Utah. Checkout confirms your address before you pay.
What if the bottle arrives damaged?
The retailer that shipped it will make it right. Just reply to your order email and they'll take care of you.
