Fox & Oden Straight Rye Whiskey

The same trick, played on a different number.

The bourbon world spent the last decade quietly pulling age statements off labels. Very Old Barton, Elijah Craig, Knob Creek. You paid the same price for a bottle that used to tell you something and stopped.

Rye whiskey has its own version of the same move. It's not about age. It's about content.

Legally, a whiskey only needs 51% rye to put "rye" on the label. The rest can be corn, the cheaper grain, and there's no way to tell from the shelf.

Ours is 95% rye and 5% malted rye. No corn in the mash bill at all. That's not a tasting note. It's the mash bill.

Why we didn't build to the minimum.

51% rye is the legal floor, not a quality target. We don't own a still or a rickhouse. We're not under pressure to stretch the mashbill with cheaper grain.

NO STILL TO FEED

A distillery has to keep production moving and costs down. Leaning on 51% rye and filling the rest with corn is cheaper. We're not the ones running that math.

NO RICKHOUSE RENT

We're not paying to age barrels ourselves. So we're not looking for shortcuts in the mashbill to offset that cost.

THE MASHBILL WE WANT

We selected a 95% rye, 5% malted rye mashbill with no corn at all. We weren't building around what's cheapest to produce.

Questions, answered

Is 95% rye actually unusual?
Yes. Legally a rye whiskey only needs 51% rye. Most big-brand ryes sit close to that minimum and fill the rest with corn.
Why no corn at all?
We chose a 95% rye, 5% malted rye mashbill on purpose. Corn wasn't part of the plan.
How long is this aged?
4 years, in new charred oak.
Will every batch taste the same?
No. Batches vary because barrels vary. That's expected, not a defect.
Where is this made?
It's blended and bottled in Holland, Michigan.
When will it arrive?
These bottles are on pre-order and start shipping August 24. Order now and yours goes out with the first run.
Can it ship to my state?
